TOI has reliably learnt that Sanjay and Anita are the two candidates left in the fray for the president’s post after two others, Jai Prakash and Dushyant Sharma, withdrew their nominations for the top job. Saturday was the last day to withdraw candidature.
While Sanjay is the UP wrestling body’s vice-president, Anita is a 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medallist and one of the key witnesses who deposed against Brij Bhushan in the sexual harassment case against him.
Sheoran is the lone female contestant in the 50-member voters’ list.
Jai Prakash, who had filed his nomination owing allegiance to Brij Bhushan, is Delhi wrestling body’s head while Dushyant is Jammu and Kashmir’s senior superintendent of police. For the secretary general’s post, it will be a two-way contest between Railways Sports Promotion Board’s (RSPB) Prem Chand Lochab and Darshan Lal after Jai Prakash withdrew his nomination.
Lochab, who has registered himself as a voter from Gujarat state wrestling body but hails from Rajasthan, has the government’s backing, while Darshan, from Brij Bhushan’s camp, has filed his nomination from the Chandigarh unit.
For the treasurer’s post, it will be a contest between Dushyant and Satya Pal Singh Deshwal. For the senior vice president’s post, Brij Bhushan loyalist and Gujarat wrestling body’s president, ID Nanavati, will be up against Sheoran panel’s Devendra Kadian from Assam unit. For the 15 posts of office-bearers, who will form part of the next WFI executive committee (EC) for the period 2023-26, the returning officer – former J&K High Court judge Mahesh Mittal Kumar – had received 32 nominations, including some staking claims on multiple posts.
