NEW DELHI: Canada’s opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, has criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the strained relations between India and Canada, stating that he will work towards re-establishing a “professional relationship” with New Delhi. Poilievre, who also leads the Conservative Party, expressed concern over the aggression shown towards Indian diplomats in Canada and the increasing incidents of hate crimes in the country. During an interview with Nepalese media outlet Namaste Radio Toronto, Poilievre emphasized the need for a professional relationship with India, acknowledging it as the world’s largest democracy.

He stated, “It’s acceptable to have disagreements and hold each other accountable, but we must maintain a professional relationship. This is what I will restore when I become the Prime Minister.”

Addressing the expulsion of 41 Canadian diplomats from India, Poilievre criticized Trudeau, asserting that his actions have damaged Canada’s reputation both domestically and internationally. He described Trudeau as “incompetent and unprofessional,” adding that Canada is currently facing conflicts with several major powers.

Poilievre also condemned the pro-Khalistan car rallies held in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver outside India’s missions. He stated, “Conservatives uphold Hindu values of faith, family, and freedom. We strongly condemn attacks on Hindu temples, threats against Hindu leaders, and any form of aggression towards Indian diplomats. Such behavior is completely unacceptable.”

In his stance against Hinduphobia, Poilievre called for criminal charges to be filed against anyone who vandalizes Hindu temples or harms individuals within them. He declared his commitment to opposing Hinduphobia and ensuring the safety and freedom of worship for all. Recent polls indicate that Poilievre is the preferred candidate to become Canada’s next prime minister, with his party holding a substantial lead over the incumbent Liberal Party. This positions his party for a potential majority government in the upcoming elections.
