NEW DELHI: It was another ‘so near, yet so far’ moment at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as batting virtuoso Virat Kohli missed out on his record-equalling 49th one-day international century against Sri Lanka at the World Cup on Thursday.
As Kohli fell for 88 in the 32nd over to left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka, the crucial moment in the game brought the packed Wankhede stadium to a stunning silence.
It is now a third time Kohli has missed out on a ton in the ongoing World Cup — having been dismissed for 85 against Australia in Chennai and 95 against New Zealand in Dharamsala.
Social media too was in disbelief as Madushanka outsmarted a well-set Kohli with a slower ball.
Kohli (103*) however has hit a century in the ongoing World Cup which came against Bangladesh in Pune.
The Kohli 49th century is being eagerly awaited as with the ton the 34-year-old will equal legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most centuries in the 50-over format.
