NEW DELHI: Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign has been dealt a significant blow as their captain, Shakib Al Hasan, will be sidelined for their final World Cup match after fracturing his finger during their recent victory over Sri Lanka. The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed this unfortunate news.
Shakib played a pivotal role in the match against Sri Lanka, scoring 82 runs and taking two wickets in a match-winning performance that earned him the player-of-the-match award.Despite sustaining an injury to his left index finger early in his innings, he continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers to help Bangladesh chase down the target of 280.
The severity of Shakib’s injury was determined after an emergency X-ray in Delhi, which confirmed a fracture on the left PIP joint. The recovery period for his injury is estimated to be three to four weeks.
In addition to his on-field contributions, Shakib was involved in the controversial time-out dismissal of Sri Lankan batter Angelo Mathews, which had led to a social media dispute where Mathews called him a “cheat.” Shakib defended his decision, emphasising that it was within the rules of the game.
Bangladesh are set to play Australia in their last group match on Saturday. However, Bangladesh have already been eliminated from the World Cup semi-finals race, having secured only two wins in eight matches.
