Following the completion of the first game in Centurion on Thursday, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced that Bavuma would not be playing in the final Test of the series against India.
On the first day of the Test match, Bavuma was hurt while fielding and was unable to continue the game as scans indicated he had strained his hamstring.
Elgar, who declared he would retire ahead of the series, will lead the team in his absence in the last game of his international career.
Elgar took over as captain after Bavuma left the field during the opening Test, and South Africa won at SuperSport Park by an innings and 32 runs.
Elgar’s outstanding century in the first Test earned him the Man of the Match award.
Beginning on January 3, Zubayr Hamza will take Bavuma’s position in the squad for the final Test, which will be held in Cape Town.
Elgar has commanded the Proteas on previous occasions, including the most recent Test series when India toured South Africa. In 2021-22, the opener set the example for the team’s 2-1 comeback victory after falling behind 0-1.
