His hunger for flying was noticed at the age of nine when he watched Hollywood movie ‘Top Gun’ with his father. It was back then when the idea of joining the armed forces took root in Stephen. While his father became one of Australia’s cricket greats and his brother pursued baseball, Stephen remained dedicated to his dreams.
Despite showing promise in cricket, Stephen’s focus never wavered from flying, and Greg supported his son’s passion by providing him with flight simulators.
Stephen joined the Australian Defence Force Academy and rose through the ranks.
Greg expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishment, stating that Stephen’s achievement surpasses anything he achieved in cricket.
Speaking to The Australian, Greg said, “We were gobsmacked initially by his huge appointment to chief (of the Air Force). Obviously, he was on that trajectory, but it wasn’t something that we expected in the short term. I would say that his achievement is greater than anything that I’ve ever achieved.”
“He did better, in the family sense…how he was able to be fully involved when he was there. I’m not sure I achieved that all the time,” added the proud father.
