Carlton father-son star Jack Silvagni will likely miss the upcoming AFL season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) at pre-season training on Thursday.

The forward hurt his knee during match simulation before being sent for scans, which confirmed the injury.

The 26-year-old will undergo surgery before beginning rehab.

Carlton’s general manager of football Brad Lloyd said the news was disappointing

“Jack had put in such a significant body of work over summer to put himself in a great position to attack the year, so we are all really feeling for Jack right now,” he said.

“While the emotion right now is one of disappointment, it is well known that Jack’s work ethic and commitment to the football club is unwavering, and it is his strong character that will be his biggest strength through his recovery process.

“We will be with him every step of the way through his rehab, and no doubt the entire Carlton faithful will be. With the energy he brings, he’ll continue to have a positive impact around the club and within the playing group throughout this season.”

Silvagni experienced a resurgence in 2023, playing 16 matches before suffering a season-ending knee injury during Carlton’s round 19 win over West Coast.

While only appearing in four of Carlton’s stunning 11-match win streak to close out the season, Silvagni signed a two-year extension with the club in September.

Having followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Sergio and father Stephen at Carlton, Silvagni has been a much-loved member at Ikon Park since he was drafted in 2015.

Showcasing impressive versatility in both the ruck and up forward, Blues captain Patrick Cripps last month declared that Silvagni formed a crucial part of the club’s 2024 premiership tilt.
