To offset the effects of the energy crisis, the caretaker government has mandated energy-saving measures such as closing all malls and marketplaces at sunset.

Under the ‘energy saving plan,’ the previous Shehbaz government also announced the closure of markets across the country by 8 p.m.

On June 6, the former federal minister made the revelation to journalists during a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) presided over by then-prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

“The NEC has approved an energy conservation plan under which shops and commercial centres will close by 8 p.m.,” he said, stressing that energy has become a major concern for Pakistan due to rising worldwide prices.

However, no action was taken to execute the reforms announced by the previous government.

According to sources close to the situation, the present energy-saving strategy will be implemented from October 1 to February 15.

According to reports, the decision will be implemented by the administrations of the four provinces, and a draught for permanent law is also being developed.

According to sources, closing markets at sundown would save 1500MW of electricity.

Meanwhile, conversations with all chambers of commerce and business communities have begun in order to close markets earlier.
