2023-24 FA Cup: Second Round – York vs Wigan

[ad_1]

York City host Wigan Athletic at York Community Stadium in the Second Round of 2023-24 FA Cup.

Victory would see York secure a Third Round spot for the first time since the 2010-11 season, whilst Wigan seek to avoid a Second Round exit for the first time since 2000-01 campaign.

Team News

Dipo Akinyemi is a doubt for York after he missed their draw at Maidenhead United with an unspecified injury.

Alex Woodyard will be available after his red card at Maidenhead was overturned upon appeal.

Wigan have no fresh injury concerns after their midweek win over Fleetwood Town, as Liam Morrison (thigh), Jason Kerr (metatarsal) and Thelo Aasgaard (ankle) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

York host Wigan at York Community Stadium in a 7:45pm GMT kick-off on Friday 2 December, live on BBC2 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • York have lost each of their two previous FA Cup ties against Wigan (L2).
  • Wigan are playing away to York for the first time in the FA Cup, with each of their two previous clashes in this competition coming at the DW Stadium.
  • Across both previous FA Cup meetings, York only scored one goal compared to Wigan’s three goals in total.
  • York have won just one of their last five FA Cup meetings against EFL teams when playing as a Non League club (W1, D1, L3), with the sole win coming in a 3-0 replay victory at home over Rotherham in November 2010.
  • Wigan are unbeaten in four of their last five FA Cup meetings against Non-League teams (W2, D2, L1), although both wins came in replays against AFC Fylde and Solihull Moors respectively.

Prediction

Whilst their immediate focus will be upon their relegation battle in the National League, York are capable of scoring goals – with eight goals in five of their last six home games, yet their defence does leak plenty of goals so a tight back line and clinical finishing will be key for them here.

Wigan meanwhile sit mid-table in League One amidst a points deduction but are unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 matches in all competitions, which is great momentum to bring into this game where they can’t afford to underestimate York.

As much as it would be thrilling to see York produce a cupset, they realistically will need Wigan to be below par and based on current form, I just don’t see the Latics losing this game no matter how hard the Minister Men push them.

Prediction: York 1-2 Wigan
