2023-24 Premier League: Week 12 – Chelsea vs Manchester City
[ad_1]
Chelsea host Premier League title chasing Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
Victory could see Chelsea climb up to eighth if Brighton and Brentford fail to win elsewhere, whilst Man City will move three points clear at the summit with a win.
Team News
Armando Broja is set to feature on the substitutes bench for Chelsea after recovering from a knee injury, which had sidelined him in recent weeks.
Trevorh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell (both hamstring), Wesley Fofana (ACL), Romeo Lavia (ankle), Carney Chukwuemeka and Christopher Nkunku (both knee) remain ruled out.
Man City will have defender, Manuel Akanji available after he sat out their midweek Champions League win over Young Boys, due to a back injury.
John Stones will be absent after he suffered a muscle injury in that game, which has also ruled him out of the England squad.
Sergio Gomez (unspecified) and Kevin De Bruyne (hamstring) remain absent.
When is Kick-Off?
Chelsea host Man City at Stamford Bridge in a 4:30pm GMT on Sunday 12 November, live on Sky Sports in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Chelsea have won two of their last nine league meetings against Man City (W2, L7).
- Man City have won of their last four league trips to Chelsea (W4, L2).
- Chelsea have lost each of their last four meetings against Man City by 1-0 results (L4).
- Three of Nicolas Jackson’s five league goals for Chelsea this season were scored on his right foot.
- City’s Erling Haaland has scored 11 goals in their opening 11 league games of the campaign, which is four goals less than the 15 goals that he managed by this stage last season.
Prediction
Although their form has improved as demonstrated by a clinical if slightly lucky win at Tottenham – where they punished some wild play and poor discipline from the hosts, Chelsea will have to be at their best because Man City will pose their most difficult test yet.
Mauricio Pochettino though should be concerned by the fact that Chelsea have taken just five points in six league games at home – including one win, which is a pretty poor return for the Blues although two of those five points came against Liverpool and Arsenal in a small positive.
Man City meanwhile comfortably cruised past Young Boys in midweek so will certainly relish this test heading into the international break and a blockbuster clash against Liverpool, especially if can get at Chelsea’s defence like Spurs did early on but keep their cool.
Chelsea though will surely have confidence from their win in North London and surely will view a win here as vital to boosting their chances of climbing into the top seven come May, but I just feel like they will be given a reality check here because they’re still a team in transition.
Prediction: Chelsea 1-3 Manchester City
