2023-24 Premier League: Week 16 – Manchester United vs Bournemouth

[ad_1]

Manchester United look to cut their deficit to the top-four in a home clash against Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Victory could see Man Utd climb to fifth, whilst Bournemouth can go 12th if Wolves and Crystal Palace both lose elsewhere.

Raphael Varane is ruled out for Man Utd with a back injury which forced him to sit out their win against Chelsea in midweek.

Christian Eriksen (knee) could return but Lisandro Martinez (foot), Casemiro (hamstring), Tyrell Malacia, Amad Diallo (both knee) and Jadon Sancho (personal) remain sidelined.

Bournemouth have no fresh injury concerns to report after their win at Crystal Palace.

Darren Randolph (illness), Ryan Fredericks (calf), Alex Scott (knee), Max Aarons, Lloyd Kelly, Tyler Adams (all hamstring) and Emiliano Marcondes (foot) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Man Utd host Bournemouth in a 3pm GMT kick-off at Old Trafford on Saturday 9 December, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Man Utd have lost one of their last eight meetings against Bournemouth (W7, L1).
  • Bournemouth have claimed one point in their six previous Premier League visits to Old Trafford (D1, L5).
  • Utd’s Casemiro scored in both appearances against Bournemouth last season (W2).
  • Four of Scott McTominay’s six league goals for Man Utd this season have been scored at home, with the Red Devils yet to lose a league game in which McTominay scored this season (W3).
  • Bournemouth have scored first in each of their last four matches (W3, D1).

Prediction

Having finally found a sudden burst of energy, intensity and two clinical goals against Chelsea in midweek amidst more wasteful finishing, Man Utd now must use that performance as a building block coming into this game which is a good chance to get back into the top-four race.

Bournemouth though have found form with one defeat in their last six league games and were clinically brilliant at Palace, especially with a proper creative intensity and press which could certainly trouble Man Utd if can apply that style here early on.

Old Trafford though hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Bournemouth in the Premier League and with Utd’s spark looking reignited, I can’t see the Cherries getting anything but they surely will make a fierce contest of this game and run the Red Devils close.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Bournemouth
