2023-24 Premier League: Week 16 – Sheffield United vs Brentford

[ad_1]

Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United welcome Brentford to Bramall Lane as the Blades continue to fight against relegation.

Sheffield Utd can move off the foot of the table with a win if Burnley lose elsewhere, whilst Brentford can go 10th with a win.

Sheffield Utd have no fresh injury concerns to report following their midweek defeat to Liverpool.

Chris Basham (ankle), John Egan (foot), George Baldock, Rhian Brewster, Rhys Norrington-Davies (all hamstring), Tom Davies (thigh), Oli McBurnie (suspension) and Daniel Jebbison (illness) are still sidelined.

Brentford will welcome midfielder, Christian Norgaard back from an one-match ban which forced him to sit out their away defeat at Brighton in midweek.

Bryan Mbeumo is ruled out after he suffered an ankle injury during their midweek loss and will be out

Josh Dasilva (hamstring) and Mathias Jensen (adductor) won’t be rushed back until declared match fit by club doctors.

Rico Henry (knee), Kristoffer Ajer (foot), Nathan Collins (ankle), Aaron Hickey (hamstring), Kevin Schade (adductor) and Ivan Toney (suspension) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Sheffield Utd host Brentford at Bramall Lane in a 3pm GMT kick-off on Saturday 9 December, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • This is Sheffield Utd’s first Premier League meeting against Brentford.
  • Brentford are winless in their last seven visits to Sheffield Utd (D4, L3).
  • Sheffield Utd have kept clean sheets in four of their last five home games against Brentford.
  • Utd’s Wes Foderingham has conceded more goals than any other top-flight goalkeeper this season, with 41 goals conceded in 15 appearances.
  • Bryan Mbeumo has registered more shots than any other Brentford player in the league this season, having produced 41 shots in 15 appearances.

Prediction

Although Wilder’s return to the dugout didn’t end in victory, he should be buoyed by how well his players performed because they took the game to Liverpool but were undone by late defensive mistakes in both halves, yet have given themselves renewed belief coming into this game.

Brentford meanwhile have struggled on their travels outside of West London this season with just one point from five such trips, which is a poor return and Mbeumo’s injury is a huge attacking blow on top of their already lengthy list of absentees.

Thomas Frank therefore needs to show his tactical nouse to find a way around this issue with only Yoane Wissa and Neal Maupay currently in decent form up front, especially after a tough defeat at Brighton where the Bees were outclassed despite some decent pieces of attacking play.

Sheffield Utd’s defence though is their Achilles heel if the opposition can stuck in and carve open space but with Wilder back and an out-of-form Brentford struggling on the road, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Blades somehow nick this.

Prediction: Sheffield United 1-0 Brentford
