2023-24 Sky Bet Championship: Week 21 – Wednesday

Middlesbrough host Hull City at the Riverside Stadium in the race for a Championship Play-Off spot.

Victory could see Middlesbrough move up to as high as ninth depending upon their winning margin and results elsewhere, whilst Hull can go seventh with a win if Cardiff lose elsewhere.

Isiah Jones is available for Middlesbrough after he was suspended for their defeat to Ipswich last weekend.

Hayden Hackney (groin), Darragh Lenihan, Tommy Smith (both Achilles), Lewis O’Brien (ankle/leg), Riley McGree (foot), Paddy McNair (back) and Marcus Forss (thigh) remain ruled out.

Hull will welcome Alfie Jones back into contention after he missed their defeat at QPR for personal reasons.

Ruben Vinagre (hamstring) is a doubt but Jason Lokilo (hamstring), Jaden Philogene and Dogukan Sinik (both knee) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Middlesbrough host Hull at the Riverside Stadium in a 8pm GMT kick-off on Wednesday 13 December, live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Middlesbrough have claimed seven points in their last six meetings against Hull (W2, D1, L3).
  • Hull have won just one of their last 14 league visits to Middlesbrough (W1, D2, L11).
  • Boro won both meetings last season by a 3-1 result with ex striker, Chuba Akpom having scored in both meetings.
  • No Middlesbrough player has been involved in more league goals this season than Matt Crooks, with the midfielder having scored three goals and created five assists in 19 appearances.
  • Defeat would see Hull lose three consecutive league games for the first time since a five-match losing streak from August – September 2022.

Prediction

After a poor performance in their defeat to Ipswich in which they just wasted their chances and lacked much end product quality, Middlesbrough must now reset and look to rediscover their spark which saw them do well in recent home games.

Hull meanwhile will surely look to deliver a reaction to their disappointing defeat at QPR because they were narrowly the better team overall, yet just lacked their usual clinical edge so I do expect them to just come out and play their game with view to better composure in their shots.

Boro though should be back to their usual best with more energy and composure in their attack so I wouldn’t be surprised if this is close, possibly ending with a point apiece.

Prediction: Middlesbrough 1-1 Hull
