Roundup of the latest Championship action as Leicester began 2024 as the pacesetters.

Tom Cannon’s brace either side of goals from Ricardo Pereira and Stephy Mavididi saw Leicester stay top with a 4-1 win over Huddersfield.

Second-placed Ipswich were held to a goalless draw at ten-men Stoke after the Potters’ Jordan Thompson was sent off in the 67th minute, following inappropriate language upon a foul from Conor Chaplin.

Southampton remain third after Adam Armstrong’s opening goal had been cancelled out by Josh Sargent in an eventual 1-1 draw at Norwich.

Patrick Bamford, Dan James and Crysencio Summerville all found the net as Leeds thrashed Birmingham City at Elland Road, which kept Daniel Farke’s Whites fourth in the table.

West Brom got cut adrift in fifth with a 1-0 defeat at Swansea, in which Liam Cullen’s 55th minute strike settled a scrappy contest.

First half goals from Alex Pritchard and Nazariy Rusyn saw Sunderland beat Preston 2-0 in the opening game of the new calendar year, which put the Black Cats up to sixth in the table.

Down in the relegation zone, Sean Morrison and Tom Eaves cancelled out goals from Arnor Sigurdsson and Sammie Szmodics respectively as rock bottom Rotherham twice fought back to draw 2-2 at Blackburn.

Perry Ng’s header condemned QPR to a 2-1 home loss to Cardiff after the Hoops’ Paul Smyth had cancelled out Dimitrios Goutas’ opening goal.

Second half goals from Marvin Johnson, Djeidi Gassama and Josh Windass saw Sheffield Wednesday beat ten-men Hull 3-1 to move to within three points of safety and droppd QPR to second bottom, after the Tigers’ Tyler Morton had been red carded before half time.

Elsewhere, Ryan Andrews’ chipped 57th minute equaliser earned Watford a 3-3 draw at Plymouth after Edo Kayembe and Ismael Kone initially netted for the Hornets either side of Finn Azaz and Morgan Whittaker’s goals but Ryan Hardie had put Argyle ahead at half time.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s brace and Haji Wright’s close-range effort saw Coventry come from behind to win 3-1 at Middlesbrough, after Josh Coburn had headed the hosts in front.

Finally, Shaun Hutchinson volleyed in an injury-time winner for Millwall in a sluggish contest away at Bristol City.
