2023-24 UEFA Champions League: Group Stage – Matchweek Six Roundup

Roundup of the final matchweek in the group stage of 2023-24 UEFA Champions League. 

Manchester United and Newcastle United entered their final group matches in need of a win and results elsewhere to go in their favour, in order to qualify for the Round of 16 alongside Arsenal and Manchester City who had already qualified.

Celtic meanwhile were playing for pride in Group E after having already been eliminated from contention.

Now, here is a roundup of all the action across the final matchweek of the group stage in 2023-24 UEFA Champions League.

 

Group A

Lukas Lerager’s 58th minute side-footed winner saw Copenhagen beat Galatasaray to finish scond in the group and qualify for the Round of 16, despite Lerager eventually being red carded in the 90th minute.

Galatasaray howeever secured Europa League knockout qualification in third place after Manchester United lost 1-0 at home to group winners, Bayern Munich as Kingsley Coman netted a 71st minute winner.

 

Group B

Arsenal topped Group B with a 1-1 draw away at PSV despite having led at half-time through Eddie Nketiah’s strike, only for Yorbe Vertessen to rescue the hosts a point with his 50th minute goal.

Angelo Fulgini’s 96th minute winner saw Lens stun Sevilla 2-1 at homee to finish third and advance into the Europa League, having initially led through Przemyslaw Frankowski’s penalty only for Sergio Ramos to bring the Spanish visitors level from the spot.

 

Group C

Joselu’s second-half brace and Dani Ceballos’ late effort saw Real Madrid top Group C unbeaten after a comeback 3-2 win at Union Berlin, after the hosts had led through Kevin Volland before Alex Kral made it 2-2 following Joselu’s double.

Serder Saatci’s own-goal and Victor Osimhen’s 33rd minute goal proved enough for second-placed Napoli to beat Braga 2-0 at Stadio Olimpico.

 

Group D

Real Sociedad topped Group D following a goalless draw away to second-placed Inter Milan, which meant that they advanced as group winners on virtue of goal difference, after the pair couldn’t be separated on head-to-head records.

Benfica beat RB Salzburg to third by virtue of goals scored in all six group matches after the Portuguese team won 3-1 away, courtesy of goals from Angel Di Maria, Rafael Silva and Arthur Cabral.

 

 

Group E

Antoine Griezmann and Samuel Dias Lino found the net as Atletico Madrid beat second-placed Lazio 2-0 to top the group and advance as Group E winners.

Gustaf Lagerbielke struck a 91st minute winner as already-eliminated Celtic beat Feynoord 2-1 at home, in which Luis Palma’s opening goal was cancelled out by Yankuba Minteh.

 

Group F

Karim Adeyemi’s 51st minute strike proved enough for Borussia Dortmund to win Group F with a 1-1 draw at home to PSG, who also advanced after Warren Zaire-Emery netted an equalising goal five minutes later to spare their blushes.

Second-half goals from Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze saw AC Milan come from behind to win 2-1 at Newcastle, which in-turn secured Europa League knockout qualification and eliminated Eddie Howe’s Magpies in last place of this group.

 

Group G

Micah Hamilton, Oscar Bobb and Kalvin Phillips all netted their maiden club goals for Manchester City in a 3-2 win away at Red Star Belgrade, despite Hwang In-beom and Aleksandar Katai netting late goals for the hosts.

Emil Forsberg netted a 56th minute winner for RB Leipzig in a 2-1 victory at home over Servette, after Benjamin Sesko’s opening goal was cancelled out by Ebrima Colley as all three goals came in the space of five minutes.

 

Group H

Barcelona advanced as Group H winners despite losing 3-2 at Royal Antwerp courtsey of a late injury-time winner from George Ilenikhena, after Ferran Torres and Marc Guiu brought the visitors back level twice to cancel out goals from Arthur Vermeeren and Vincent Janssen.

Goals from Pepe and Francisco Conceicao saw Porto defeat Shakhtar Donetsk to snatch the second qualification spot with a dramatic 5-3 home win, having initially led 2-1 at half-time through Galeno’s brace.
