Leaders of Manitoba’s major parties to face off in CBC debate as election period enters final stretch | CBC News

With less than two weeks until Manitobans choose their next government, the leaders of Manitoba’s three major political parties will meet face-to-face during a Thursday night debate hosted by CBC.

Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont, NDP Leader Wab Kinew and Progressive Conservative Leader Heather Stefanson will discuss the most pressing issues in Manitoba during the hour-long, commercial-free debate, which begins at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on CBC TV, CBC Radio and online.

A half-hour post-debate analysis will follow with CBC’s Janet Stewart, Ian Froese and Bartley Kives.

The debate comes a day after the release of an Angus Reid Institute poll that suggests the NDP are leading the PCs in popular support.

The survey of 990 Manitoban adults, conducted from Sept. 13 to 19, found that 47 per cent of respondents said they intended to vote for the NDP, while 41 per cent supported the PCs and nine per cent supported the Liberals.

The poll suggests a shift in voter intention since June, when a Probe Research poll reported a provincewide deadlock in party support.

The coming election will also be a test for the PCs under Heather Stefanson, who has never stood a provincial election as party leader.

Heading into the election period, the governing PCs held 35 of the 57 seats in Manitoba’s Legislature. The NDP had 18, the Liberals held three and one seat was vacant.

Advance voting opens on Sept. 23 and runs until Sept. 30.

Election day is Oct. 3.
