Windsor is a music town—from the Windsor Symphony Orchestra to local bands, to the thriving Detroit music scene just across the river. 

CBC Windsor’s own Mike Hargreaves is a musician himself and founder of local record label Soul City Music Co-Op. Here are his picks of songs from Windsor artists released in 2023 that you should give a listen.

Groove to ‘On the Surface’ by Bilal Nasser 

Windsorite, post-classical guitarist and Palestinian-Canadian artist Bilal Nasser released ‘On the Surface’ this year. 

By using looping guitar pedals and other sound machines with gentle, dreamy singing, Nasser creates a unique and ambient sound.

Be enchanted by ‘Waltz of the Birds and the Bees’ by Willowbrook 

Windsor’s own Melody Grace, who goes by the name Willowbrook went viral with one of their enchanting folk songs this year, reaching over 100,000 streams on Spotify. 

Willowbrook is the youngest artist to host the open mic night at Phog Lounge. 

You can watch out for Willowbrook’s new album in 2024, after you have a listen to their 2023 single ‘Waltz of the Birds and the Bees’.

Leamington’s Billy Raffoul has had a long year on the road. He’s been touring, performing through Canada, Europe and the U.S. since last February, sharing his unique voice and powerful lyrics with audiences wherever he goes.
