SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -The Stick It to Brain Tumors Tournament has been fundraising for pediatric brain cancer research since 2007. Women’s hockey teams will compete Friday through Sunday at Union College to encourage donations.
In 2001, Debbie Jackson’s son was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The Jackon’s decided from then on to help prevent cancer and find a cure and started the hockey fundraiser.
“We were lucky because brain cancer kills a lot of people and our son was very fortunate. We’ve raised $300,000 since 2007 even with two COVID years,” explained Jackson.
All the money goes to Johns Hopkins and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. “80 or more raffle items that people have done great jobs of getting materials and donating them. We also have a silent auction,” added Jackson.
The tournament has a goal of raising $20,000. Teams with the Albany Angels are ready to play for days to make it happen.
“I played two last night, I played two today, two tomorrow, and at least one on Sunday. I love being able to play with all three of the teams,” described Shannon Woodley, one of the Albany Angels goalies.
“Raising money for a good charity but also having a great time playing hockey is what it’s all about,” stated Woodley.
The games will continue at Union College all day Saturday and until Sunday at 3 p.m. Click here for a link to donate.
