Bizarre scenes as Sri Lankan dismissed after timing out

In bizarre scenes at the Cricket World Cup, Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews became the first batter in men’s international cricket to be dismissed after being timed out.

Mathews was sent packing without having faced a single ball after trying to fix his broken helmet before taking longer than the allocated three minutes to take strike.

Mathews came to the crease in the 24th over with Sri Lanka 135-4 against Bangladesh.

Replays showed Mathews take to the field within the allocated time limit and set himself to take strike before tugging on his helmet strap. In the moment the strap unfastened and came loose in his hand.

As Mathews asked the 12th man to retrieve another helmet, Bangladesh appealed and the umpires obliged.

“Oh dear, oh dear,” former Sri Lankan cricketer Russel Arnold said in commentary.

“Given out without facing a ball. Timed out.”

MCC Rule 40.1.1 states that, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within three minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, timed out.”

Six players are known to have been timed out in first-class cricket, the most recent being Zimbabwe’s Charles Kunje when playing for the Matabeleland Tuskers against Mountaineers at Bulawayo in the 2017-18 season.

Neither Sri Lanka nor Bangladesh are in contention to make the knockout stages, positioned seventh and ninth on the table, however a win for Bangladesh could mean England misses out on playing in the Champions Trophy.
