49ers QB Roll Call: How is Brock Purdy’s arm for encore practice?

SANTA CLARA — Friday brought the 49ers’ third practice of training camp, and, most important, it offered a look at how Brock Purdy’s surgically repaired elbow responded on back-to-back days of action. Here is a recap of how he and the other three quarterbacks performed:
BROCK PURDY
All 18 first-team snaps went his way, just as all 21 did in Purdy’s practice debut Thursday, meaning that his arm showed no ill effects or required any extra rest in his valiant comeback. His best throw was among his final ones: a 25-yard completion to Deebo Samuel over the middle after Purdy’s play-action methods had him turn his back to the defense then rotate around to find Samuel.
He wrapped up a 6-of-12 passing line with his third completion of the morning to Christian McCaffrey. A day after going 3-of-10 with an interception, Purdy nearly had a pass snagged by nickel back Isaiah Oliver as he converged on tight end Brayden Willis. Purdy’s other completions went to Brandon Aiyuk, who remains a favorite target for any quarterback.
Stats: 6-of-12 in full-team drills; no 7-on-7 action for any quarterbacks.
TREY LANCE
For a third-year quarterback who could use as many reps as possible to play catch up in his career, it’s odd to see Lance rotate in for second-team reps, then attempt just five passes. His only completions were to Tay Martin and Willis. Lance darted out of the pocket and raced for toward a potential first down, and while passing is an emphasis now, seeing him run is an encouraging sign in terms of his own comeback, from a Week 2 fractured ankle.
Stats: 2-of-5 in full-team drills.
SAM DARNOLD
Arguably the nicest pass of camp was delivered by Darnold as he laced a 25-yard bullet to running back Elijah Mitchell down the left hashmarks. Darnold capped his 3-of-6 day with a completion to Jauan Jennings, who reached high with one hand to corral the 10-yard toss from Darnold, who was hit as he threw. Darnold did miss a deep shot to Ray-Ray McCloud in one-on-one coverage.
Stats: 3-of-6.
BRANDON ALLEN
Again, the third-team duties fell to Allen, and he completed just 1-of-4 attempts, with that connection going to Jordan Mason. His first two throws were dropped by Jennings and Danny Gray, and his last pass nearly got intercepted by Tayler Hawkins on a shot that Willie Snead IV had no chance at nabbing.
Stats: 1-of-4
