Just like he did in the first set, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina took four cracks to finally put away Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild.

But he still serves Seyboth Wild a doughnut in the second set – he sealed a 6-4, 6-0 victory.

“A real statement from the Spaniard on day one of the United Cup,” David Culbert quipped in commentary for Nine.

Davidovich Fokina said the win would give him a fresh shot of confidence heading into the new year.

“It is great to start like this – the year, the confidence it gives me, this match, it means lot to me,” he told Todd Woodbridge courtside.

“I’m very happy with the performance today.”

Davidovich Fokina is fresh from a break, having not played since the Paris Masters in November.

“It is great to have some holidays, because the tour is very long, we compete all year, so to have 15 or 20 days off, don’t (play) any tennis and don’t see anything about tennis, it is great to refresh your mind and start very strong.”
