A Delhi-based hospital successfully removed 39 coins and 37 magnets from a man’s intestine through surgery, after he ingested them under the mistaken belief that zinc aids in body-building.

Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, a 26-year-old patient who reportedly suffers from a psychiatric illness visited the emergency ward with complaints of persistent vomiting and abdominal pain lasting over 20 days, Wion reported.

The patient also reported he could not eat anything.

The patient’s family revealed that the patient had been consuming coins and magnets for weeks, leading to intestinal blockage.

A computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed the accumulation, requiring immediate surgical intervention, indicating a significant need for medical attention.

The medical team successfully extracted 39 coins and 37 magnets from a patient’s digestive tract, including INR1, 2, and 5, and magnets of various shapes, including heart, spherical, star, bullet, and triangle.

An X-ray scan after the successful procedure confirmed the complete removal of all foreign objects and the patient was discharged in a healthy condition after a week-long hospital stay.

Additionally, they revealed that the unidentified patient was undergoing treatment for a “known case of psychiatric illness,” reports ANI.

Later, the patient revealed that he had swallowed the magnets to ensure the coins remained in the intestine for enhanced zinc absorption to aid in body-building.
