It was initially falsely reported that Williams had died after suffering a blow to the head on a construction site on Sept. 5, though days later it was revealed that he was in hospital “fighting for his life.”

Williams died on Sept. 12, though it turns out that the accident wasn’t the main culprit in his demise.

According to the Hillsborough County medical examiner department, he succumbed to “Bacterial Sepsis with Cerebral Abscesses and Necrotizing Lobar Pneumonia due to multiple Dental Caries and retained tooth roots.”

In layman’s terms, Williams had pus growing around his brain after he had severe dental problems to the point where infections spread. This also led to brain swelling.

Williams reportedly was injured when a steel beam fell on his head, causing a massive head injury. He suffered swelling on his brain and spinal cord, and was completely paralyzed in his right arm and from the waist down.

Fox 13 Tampa also says heart disease played a role in his death and that he had suffered from cardiac arrest shortly after the construction accident.

A fourth-round pick in 2010 by Tampa Bay, Williams played four seasons with the Bucs before playing his final NFL season in 2014 with the Buffalo Bills. He had 223 career catches for 3,089 receiving yards in 63 games and finished in offensive rookie of the year voting.
