David Warner might be easing his way out of international cricket, but he’s managing to keep himself in the headlines.
The opener spoke with media on Monday and was asked about the time he played in Ōamaru in North Otago during New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition.
”I literally thought it was a ghost town,” Warner said.
“I was walking down the street – I think it was a Saturday or something. There was just no one there. We played on a football field.”
Waitaki mayor Gary Kircher has hit back at Warner, labelling him “out of touch”.
“I can’t help but feel Mr Warner may have had his experience in Ōamaru dampened by being caught behind after only six balls,” Kircher said.
“However, we’re very proud of North Otago and its gentler pace of life.
“His rough comments can’t take the shine off our community.
“In the near 14 years since his visit, a lot has changed for Ōamaru as a town and a tourist destination.
“We’ve seen rising tourism numbers, local businesses excelling and have become a draw for New Zealanders looking to escape the hurly-burly of city life.”
The mayor’s reply continued with him offering Warner a tour of the town, “once the Black Caps are finished with him”.
