Earlier this year, in April, Maruti Suzuki India Limited launched its most unique vehicle, the Fronx crossover SUV, in India. This crossover is based on the premium hatchback Baleno from the brand and comes with two petrol engine options. It also gets a CNG variant, and recently, this CNG variant was raced against its sibling Baleno in a drag race. The video and result of this drag race have been shared online, and the results might surprise you.
Baleno Hatchback vs Fronx Crossover
The drag race video of these two Maruti Suzuki siblings has been shared on YouTube by Gaurav Kumar on their channel. The video starts off with the presenter introducing the two cars. He mentions that both cars here come equipped with the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The only difference between the two models is that the Fronx here has been equipped with a CNG cylinder.
Following the introduction, the race between them commences. The presenter states that for the drag race, they will be turning off the air conditioning system and also the traction control system. Next up, after three honks of the horn, both vehicles launch off the line. The Baleno immediately takes a jump start and leads the race. The Fronx, however, was not too far behind the Baleno. But despite trying out for a while, it could not catch up with the Baleno and hence loses out.

Why did the Fronx lose?
Later in the video, the presenter adds that one of the reasons the Fronx lost is because of the driver. He stated that as the driver of the Fronx was alone, he had to do the shifting and recording of the video both at the same time, and because of this, he could not concentrate. Next up, he added that another reason for Fronx’s loss could be the additional weight of the CNG cylinder in its boot. The Baleno driver, however, added that his car also has an additional weight of around 25-30 kgs because of the sound dampening material.
Baleno vs Fronx: Drivetrains
The Baleno hatchback from Maruti Suzuki comes equipped with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine. This engine makes around 88 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the Fronx in this video also comes with the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. However, because of the addition of the CNG kit, it makes significantly less power than the Baleno. The Fronx CNG makes around 76 bhp of power and 98 Nm of torque.
Apart from this CNG engine, the Fronx also gets the same engine as the Baleno, which makes 88 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. In addition to these two powerplant options, there is a third and the most powerful petrol engine on offer as well. It is called the Boosterjet engine, which is a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine that makes significantly more power of 99 bhp and 147 Nm of torque. In terms of transmission options, the Fronx comes with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and also gets options between 5 and 6-speed automatic transmissions depending upon the powerplant selected.
