Ten Hag’s ex-assistant opens up on Man Utd boss who “doesn’t like” criticism – Footymercato.com

Erik ten Hag’s former assistant insists the Manchester United manager “doesn’t like” criticism – as pressure grows at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are enduring a tough campaign, both domestically and in Europe. They are sixth in the Premier League table – seven points behind leaders and local rivals Manchester City – and have already been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle.

United’s Champions League hopes also hang in the balance after losing three of their first four games. Ten Hag, who was appointed as manager in May 2022, needs to turn things around quickly if he’s to have a lengthy and successful career in Manchester.

Yet Aron Winter, who was Ten Hag’s assistant at Ajax between 2017 and 2019, believes in his former boss. Winter has highlighted Ten Hag’s first season in charge of United, in which they won the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League.

“When he gets criticism, he doesn’t like it, but he knows what he is doing,” Winter, who is now in charge of Suriname’s national team, told The Sun. “If you listen to everything it makes you crazy. He has that quality to close his ears and work.

“He is a very good coach, but also very strict and very structured. He is always thinking how to win, how to damage an opponent. He showed that last year. He won a trophy. His problems now are injuries and a start to the season that was not so good.”

Winter has pointed at Ten Hag’s “difficult” first six months in charge of Ajax, which he recovered from to win three consecutive Eredivisie titles. That achievement now looks very impressive, with Ajax currently sitting just three points above the relegation zone.

Winter is concerned Ten Hag doesn’t have “enough” people around him that understand United’s “DNA”. Yet he’s happy to see Steve McLaren, who was Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant during the Treble-winning season 25 years ago, part of Ten Hag’s backroom staff.

Ten Hag told fans he was confident he could turn the tide in his programme notes earlier this month. He wrote: “There is pressure on everybody involved with this club, but those demands and standards are a challenge which we must always meet head-on.
