The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has become the most visited ICC competition in history, with 1,250,307 fans entering stadiums to experience the biggest Cricket World Cup (CWC) ever, which resulted in Australia’s astounding sixth championship.
The World Cup concluded in front of a raucous crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19. However, with six games remaining, the number of spectators had already crossed the one million mark.
The CWC opened with the highest attendance ever for a World Cup opening game when England played New Zealand in a rematch of the 2019 final. Additionally, on October 14, India played Pakistan in the most-attended match in ICC World Cup history, as supporters poured through the gates.
With more spectators than at any previous ICC event, the figure of more than 1.25 million sets a new record in cricket history. The 2015 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand drew 1,016,420 spectators, whereas the 2019 tournament in England and Wales drew 752,000 spectators.
The Men’s Cricket World Cup has surpassed these numbers in addition to smashing numerous records for broadcast and digital viewership, demonstrating the sport’s expanding appeal and global reach.
Chris Tetley, ICC Head of Events, said, “The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has been a great success, showcasing the best aspects of the game and capturing the hearts of hundreds of millions of fans across the world. The staggering attendance demonstrates the enduring appeal of cricket and the excitement the ODI format continues to offer. It has been an event that has not only entertained but also united cricket fans globally in a celebration of the sport.
“ICC events play an important part in growing our game and inspiring the next generation of fans and players around the world. We would like to thank all the fans who contributed to making the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 such a resounding success, and look forward to sharing more thrilling experiences for everyone in future ICC events.”
