Toyota announces 3rd factory in India: 7 seat Corolla Cross to be produced from 3rd factory

Toyota is set to reinforce its manufacturing presence in India with the announcement of a new plant, marking a significant milestone for the automaker in its 25th year in the country. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Toyota and the Karnataka government outlines plans for a third manufacturing facility in Bidadi, Karnataka. This strategic move will require an investment of approximately Rs 3,300 crores and is expected to generate around 2,000 job opportunities.
The new plant, anticipated to be operational by 2026, is poised to play a crucial role in augmenting Toyota’s production capacity by 1 lakh units annually. This addition will contribute substantially to the existing combined output of approximately 4 lakh units per annum from Toyota’s two existing plants in Bidadi.
The forthcoming manufacturing hub will serve as the primary production base for an upcoming three-row SUV, codenamed the 340D. This SUV, a longer version of the Corolla Cross available overseas, is anticipated to hit the market by 2026 with an annual production target of 60,000 units.
The India-specific Corolla Cross-based SUV will utilize Toyota’s TNGA-C platform, shared with the Innova Hycross. While the global Corolla Cross boasts a 2,640mm wheelbase, the India-bound version is expected to be lengthened by approximately 150mm, accommodating a third row of seats.
Notable enhancements to the SUV’s interior and exterior are anticipated, including a revamped nose, new soft parts, and a completely redesigned rear end. The extended waiting period for the SUV variant is attributed to the global semiconductor shortage, affecting deliveries of the higher-end variants despite Toyota’s production ramp-up efforts.
Furthermore, Toyota’s showcase of the new IMV 0 ladder-frame platform at the Japan Mobility Show hints at the introduction of more affordable alternatives for vehicles like the Hilux pickup truck and Fortuner SUV in India. The specific plant for producing models based on this platform remains undisclosed.
The announcement of this new manufacturing plant aligns with Toyota’s commitment to ‘Make-in-India,’ showcasing its dedication to contributing to the local ecosystem. The strategic investment of Rs 3,300 crore underlines Toyota’s commitment to fostering advanced clean technologies and promoting economic growth.
While the new plant is expected to alleviate waiting periods for popular models like the Innova Hycross hybrid MPV, customers might continue to experience extended wait times until the plant becomes operational in 2026. Toyota’s cumulative investments in India, exceeding Rs 16,000 crore, have not only created jobs but also underscore the brand’s significant contributions to the Indian automotive landscape.
