‘Very sad’: Much-loved business to close after 142 years

We previously reported in October that the local store revealed they would be selling up.

The much-loved business originally hoped it would continue to trade as a hardware store – under new management and ownership.

However, after 142 years of serving the community, the owners announced they have been unable to secure a “viable offer” to sell up.

Delivering the devastating news, the handy shop revealed it means they will cease trading in early 2024.

Announcing the closure, Gibb Stuart Home Hardware, Bridge of Weir, took to social media to say: “Most regrettably up till now we have been unable to secure a viable offer to sell the business as a going concern.

“Unfortunately this means that the hardware store will cease trading early in the New Year.

“We would like to thank you all for allowing us to be part of the community, this decision has not been easy, least of all on our wonderful, loyal staff.

“Please note the closure of W Gibb Stuart Ltd, trading as ‘Gibb Stuart’s Home Hardware’ is not linked to any of the other members’ shops in the Home Hardware (Scotland) group including the Home Hardware direct website. These are separately managed businesses.”

Gutted punters of the store flocked to the comments of the post to share their sadness.

One said: “So sorry to know the business will cease trading after so many years of remarkable service; you will all be very sadly missed.”

Another added: “My favourite shop in the village. Very sad to hear this.”

Meanwhile, a third chimed: “The village won’t be the same without you.”
