NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Pickett will undergo ankle surgery after being injured in Sunday’s loss against the Arizona Cardinals.
However, the Steelers are not planning to place Pickett on injured reserve, a sign that he could return before the end of the regular season.
Pickett definitely will be out for Thursday’s game against the New England Patriots, making veteran Mitchell Trubisky the starter.
The Steelers (7-5) are in a four-way tie for the three wild-card spots in the AFC with the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns. The Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos lurk just behind at 6-6.
