Customers want a cheaper, rear wheel drive Jimny but Maruti won’t build it: Here’s why

The recently launched 4×2 variants of the Mahindra Thar have proven immensely popular, with sales skyrocketing since their unveiling. Mahindra initially had no intention of debuting rear-wheel drive Thar models. However, recognizing the sizable market potential, they ultimately decided to cater to consumer demand. Maruti Suzuki, on the other hand, remains steadfast in their commitment to avoiding two-wheel drive Jimny trims in the foreseeable future.

According to an analysis by the Autocar India, introducing a 2WD Jimny could result in brand dilution. This is true, we agree. It can undermine the rugged off-roading image the model has cultivated over decades internationally. The Jimny brand is synonymous with formidable rough-terrain capabilities, whereas RWD SUVs typically prioritize on-road refinement over off-road performance.

Nonetheless, 4×2 powertrains provide numerous advantages that resonate with the majority of Indian buyers, who utilize their vehicles predominantly for urban and suburban commuting. Most consumers have minimal understanding of advanced 4WD systems and little need for such hardcore functionality. Consequently, they display reluctance towards paying a premium for complex hardware unlikely to be utilized regularly.

By forgoing complex 4WD configurations, 4×2 vehicles deliver enhanced fuel efficiency alongside reduced weight and manufacturing costs. This combination of efficiency and value holds widespread appeal in the price-sensitive Indian marketplace. Had Maruti Suzuki supplemented the existing Jimny range with more affordable 4×2 variants, the model could have likely attracted extensive interest from buyers seeking a family-friendly SUV without strict off-roading prerequisites.

Massive discounts on the Jimny

Maruti Suzuki has been providing enticing discounts and benefits on the popular Jimny SUV for several months now. During Diwali, the company offered a discount of approximately Rs 1 lakh on the Jimny. However, they have now taken it a step further by offering a discount of Rs 2 lakh on the entry-level variant for a limited period. This means that the starting price of the Jimny Zeta MT has been reduced to Rs 10.74 lakh from the original Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-showroom).

With this significant price reduction, the Jimny becomes a much more affordable option compared to its competitors. In fact, at this price point, the Jimny is almost Rs 4 lakh cheaper than the base model Thar petrol 4WD MT with a Hard top. This makes the Jimny an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers who desire a capable and stylish SUV.

To further boost sales, Maruti Suzuki has launched the Jimny Thunder Edition in the market. This special edition comes with a host of additional accessories at no extra cost. Customers have the option to choose the Thunder Edition kit for both the entry-level Zeta variant and the top-spec Alpha trim. This gives buyers the opportunity to further personalize their Jimny and enhance its appeal.
