Recently, Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation Gen. (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd) in a written reply in the Lok Sabha said that the airfares operate on a dynamic system, shaped by the forces of demand and supply. Various factors contribute to these fares, including the number of seats sold on a flight, fuel prices, aircraft capacity, competition, seasons, holidays, events, and more, he said.
Government regulations don’t directly set or control airfares. Under Rule 135 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, scheduled air service providers are mandated to establish tariffs considering factors like operational costs, service characteristics, and existing market tariffs. Airlines have the liberty to set fares in accordance with their operational feasibilities while complying with the outlined regulations, he added.
