Douglas Bell, 76, collided with a bolder near Corpus Christie Primary School in Knightswood on January 20, 2023.

The city’s Sheriff Court heard that the area was busy with children around 9am.

Prosecutor Caitlin McAllister said: “Bell was seen in a Mercedes with one hand on the steering wheel and his phone in his ear.

“Witnesses observed him turn around a mini roundabout.

“He lost control of the vehicle and collided with a bolder.”

Police were then contacted and Bell was cautioned and charged.

Bell, of Corstorphine in Edinburgh, pled guilty today to careless driving.

Jim Rhodes, defending, told the court that his client has stepped back from his role as a professional driver.

It was stated that his client was due to retire next month.

Sheriff Owen Mullan fined Bell £580 and put eight penalty points on Bell’s driving licence.
