Engine 101: How to assemble an LS top end, including heads, valvetrain, intake, and valve covers!
Putting an engine together can be a pretty intense and difficult task depending on the engine and on the tools that you may or may not have. But, luckily, an LS engine is one of the easier ones to work on and if you are talking about the top half of the engine you can put them together with nothing special other than a torque wrench and a set of sockets. These engines go together well, and there are not weird tricks in the grand scheme of things. So if you want to do some work on your own LS, watch this video from RedDirtRodz as Jefferson puts the top end of his 5.3 project back together.

Side note- Yes, Jefferson used a 1/4″-drive impact on most of the small fasteners. This gun yield 12ish lb-ft of torque, and it has been used daily for over 10 years, Jefferson knows what it is going to put out, so this one falls into the catagory of “knowing your tools and processes” over buying a specialty inch-lbs torque wrench. Most of us just doing these low-torque fasteners by hand anyway. Just sayin’.
