Fire crews scrambled to the iconic Blackpool Tower this afternoon (December 28) after reports of a fire that turned out to be “orange netting” blowing in the wind.
Footage from the scene appeared to show flames on the landing platform at the tower, with Lancashire Fire and Rescue deploying six fire engines, a drone team and a rope rescue team. An evacuation even went ahead.
But in an update from Lancashire Police, it turns out the “fire” was “orange netting” that is being used while the landmark is being renovated.
Divisional Commander Chief Supt Karen Edwards said in a statement: “We are at the scene in support of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Blackpool Council and Merlin Entertainment.
“The top of the tower is currently closed for renovation and difficult to access. Our helicopter has flown over the tower and there is no fire. We can confirm what can be seen is orange netting.
“One man has been arrested on suspicion of Breach of the Peace and is being transported to custody.”
