NEW DELHI: Mohamed Salah showcased his brilliance with a double as Liverpool secured a 4-2 victory over Newcastle United in a thrilling encounter at Anfield, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League by three points. Aston Villa posed an unexpected challenge in second place.
Despite Newcastle’s resilience and Martin Dubravka’s heroics with 10 crucial saves, Liverpool’s dominance was evident, leaving Jurgen Klopp‘s side five points clear of Manchester City and Arsenal as they head into the Premier League’s winter break.
Salah, Curtis Jones, and Cody Gakpo found the net for Liverpool in the second half, compensating for Salah’s missed penalty in the first half. Klopp expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, describing it as a “special game” and a “sensational game from my team.”

The victory, however, highlighted Newcastle’s struggles as they suffered their seventh defeat in eight games. Despite a spirited effort, Eddie Howe‘s men find themselves in ninth place, 11 points adrift of the top four.
Dubravka’s outstanding form in goal kept Newcastle in contention, denying Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez on multiple occasions. Luis Diaz had a goal disallowed for offside, and Salah missed a penalty, but the Egyptian redeemed himself in the second half.
Newcastle briefly equalized through Alexander Isak, who capitalized on Anthony Gordon’s assist. Nevertheless, Liverpool continued their relentless attack, with goals from Jones and Gakpo securing the victory.

Salah’s standout performance, including his 150th Premier League goal, marked a fitting farewell before his departure for the African Cup of Nations. Klopp praised Salah’s ability to refocus and make a difference after a challenging first half.
Despite the defeat, Howe expressed confidence in his team’s effort, citing a congested December schedule and the absence of key players. Newcastle’s struggle continues, with the second-worst away record in the Premier League this season.
Liverpool’s dominance, Salah’s brilliance, and a spirited Newcastle side created a memorable spectacle at Anfield, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the resumption of Premier League action after the winter break.
