NEW DELHI: Former Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar expressed his surprise over the first day action of the second India-South Africa Test where 23 wickets tumbled in
Cape Town on Wednesday – second highest on Day 1 of a Test.
After opting to bat, South Africa folded for 55 in just 23.2 overs courtesy a breathtaking spell from Mohammed Siraj returning astonishing figures of 6/15 in 9 overs.India started out way better, but a late batting collapse saw them get all out as well for 153. The visitors lost their last six wickets in the space of 11 deliveries without adding a run.
Later in their second innings, the Proteas lost three wickets to reach 62 at stumps.
Tendulkar took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his perspective on how the events of the first day unfolded.
“Cricket in ’24 begins with 23 wickets falling in a single day. Unreal! Boarded a flight when South Africa was all out, and now that I’m home, the TV shows South Africa has lost 3 wickets. What did I miss?” Sachin wrote on X.
The most wickets during the first day of a Test was during an Australia versus England Test back in 1902, when 25 wickets fell on the first day itself.
The highest-ever wickets falling on a single day of a Test match was during the first Test between England and Australia back in 1888.
India also became the first-ever country to lose six wickets in a row without scoring a run. India was 153/4 at one point. But within the 11 balls, India was bundled out for 153.
