Didier Deschamps is probably used to getting advice on who to call up for the French national team. After all, former Les Bleus coach and World Cup finalist Raymond Domenech once said that France was a nation of “60 million coaches minus me”.

Of all the people he would expect to receive advice from, French First Lady Brigitte Macron would probably not be high on the list, and yet that is exactly what happened last Friday during a charity hospital visit in Reims. According to Le Parisien, Macron suggested to World Cup winner Deschamps that he should call up Stade de Reims forward Junya Ito (30), currently representing Japan at the AFC Asian Cup and counting 17 Ligue 1 appearances (Two goals and four assists) for Will Still’s high-flying side this season. 

Deschamps saw the funny side. After informing Macron that Ito was Japanese, he went on to praise Will Still’s side, currently sixth in Ligue 1 and punching above their weight. Better luck next time Brigitte!
