SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A high surf advisory goes into effect for San Diego County coastal areas Saturday at 4 p.m. through Tuesday at 10 p.m. Large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet with sets of 10 to 12 feet are expected.
Lt. Lonnie Stephens with San Diego lifeguards says these are dangerous swimming and surfing conditions.
“It’s going to increase rip current risks and just all kinds of hazards up and down the coastline,” Stephens said.
Coastal areas could also potentially see some beach erosion and minor flooding during morning high tides. Lt Stephens says additional staff will be on duty patrolling the coastline and they will have rescue vessels ready to respond.
“We don’t see these waves very often here in San Diego,” Stephens said. “Most people don’t have the opportunity to train for these waves, so we are saying people who are experts only.”
If you’re not an experienced swimmer or surfer, the best and safest move is to stay out of the water and stay off rock jetties.
“People need to be very mindful when they are down enjoying the beach, please observe from a distance,” Stephens said.
