If you were enjoying Tuesday’s surprisingly warm temperatures in Ottawa, be prepared for a weather whiplash.
Environment Canada has issued a flash freeze warning for most of eastern Ontario and almost all of Quebec.
“A dramatic change in temperatures is expected on Wednesday with the passage of a sharp cold front,” Environment Canada said Tuesday afternoon.
The warning stretches as far south as Kingston, Ont., and as far north as Caniapiscau in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region.
By Wednesday night, Ottawa is expected to hit a low of –13 C with the chance of rain showers or flurries.
Environment Canada is warning people to be cautious of suddenly icy and slippery surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots.
“Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas,” the national weather agency cautioned.
Heat records set in parts of Ontario
Tuesday has already broken daily temperature records in some Ontario communities including Belleville, Kemptville and Picton.
Ottawa is on track to break a temperature record on Wednesday. The capital is forecast to hit a high of 14 C before the expected flash freeze ends the balmy weather.
The previous record for that day is 9.9 C, set in 2018.
Experts at Environment Canada suggest a mix of climate change and El Niño are to blame for this year’s mild winter, which prevented the Rideau Canal Skateway from opening for more than 10 days in total.
