SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego Unified School District unveils its first student-designed and-operated food truck.
“We are actually empowering kids to build their own business and then also learn skills along the way that they can use here in school, but also in their years beyond high school,” Intuit’s Silke Bradford said.
The program is in partnership with Intuit – the maker of Turbotax, Quickbooks and other small business tools. They donated the food truck, equipped with a fully operational commercial-grade kitchen, allowing SDUSD’S College, Career and Technical Education students to develop technical, financial and entrepreneurial skills needed to run a business.
“We have five culinary programs across the district, so we wanted to make sure that there was a way that all of them could be involved. So they all worked on thinking about what could be the name of the truck, what they want to sell and we could all use it and share it across the district,” said Sarah Vielma, Director of SDUSD’s College, Career Technical Education Studies.
Senior Kristine Huynh came up with a name, “Sunset Bites,” after spending time at the beach with her family.
“I was able to create the name for the food truck, which is ‘Sunset Bites.’ I was thinking about what reminded me of San Diego,” Huynh said.
Patrick Henry High School 12th Grader Maya Diaz helped with graphic design.
“We started off with just a blank canvas, a blank white food truck and we had to work around it with the name. All we had was the name and we put everything together and it worked out really well,” Diaz said.
San Diego Unified is now one of six Intuit Prosperity Hubs across several states. That’s where they make good on their commitment to invest in communities and “power prosperity.”
“They’re learning entrepreneurial, financial and technical skills that they will need when they graduate,” Silke Bradford said.
