The First Mid-Engine Hot Rod

How in the hell can you call a British sports car a traditional hot rod? What is the matter with you? Where do you get off tainting a sacred space with such bullshit?

The McLaren M1A was initially developed in the early 1960’s with the idea that if you mixed brute American Power with European thoughtfulness, you might actually have something. So Bruce McLaren used his undeniable experience in road racing to develop a platform ready made for the power that Californian hot rodders were capable of producing.

The result was the McLaren M1A – a car that many see as an indirect predecessor of the Ford GT.

Anyway, I could ramble incessantly about this marvel, its era of conception, and the characters orchestrating the symphony. But spare me the monotony of my own opinions—I’m not delving into that abyss.

Instead, I figured I would feature this flawed video that Jay Leno recently put out. In it, they over-emphasize Elvis’ connection to the car while at the same time disparaging Elvis as “not a real car guy.” But, none of that really matters… Seeing such a special M1A under power from its SBC is enough to make anyone smile.

Don’t just take my word for it:
