Sarina Wiegman’s England have been handed a tough qualifying path in their quest to defend their title at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

Wiegman’s Lionesses were handed the ‘group of death’ after they were drawn in League A3 alongside Olympics host – France, Sweden who finished third at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, plus Republic of Ireland in what will be a difficult group to achieve automatic qualification from despite being the reigning champions.

Beaten UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 finalists, Germany will meanwhile face Austria, Iceland and Poland in an easy-looking League A4.

World champions, Spain were drawn in League A2 along with 2017 runners-up, Denmark plus Belgium and Czech Republic.

Scotland have been drawn in League B2 where they will take on Serbia, Slovakia and Israel, with Pedro Martinez’s Tartan Army favourites to claim promotion to League A and a seeded spot in the play-offs.

Northern Ireland have been drawn against Portugal, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Malta in League B3, where they will be expected to fight for a play-off spot.

Wales will face Croatia, Ukraine and Kosovo in League B4 as ex Canada and England assistant manager, Rhian Wilkinson prepares to lead the Welsh in their push to reach the main tournament for the first time in their history.

Qualifying Group Phase will take place between 3 April – 16 July across three fortnightly international windows, with two matches scheduled to be played within each window.

Play-Offs will then be held across two rounds from 23-29 October and 27 November – 3 December.

Under this new Qualifying format, the top two teams in each League A group will automatically qualify for the main tournament, alongside hosts – Switzerland.

Those who finish third and fourth in League A groups will be seeded in the play-offs but the bottom-placed teams will also suffer relegation for the next UEFA Women’s Nations League (UWNL) tournament, as will be the case for League B teams – although the latter teams would be unseeded if reach play-offs.

League B winners will not only guarantee promotion to League A for the next UNWL tournament but also advance to the play-offs and also be seeded, whilst second and third-placed teams would also advance – with the two best group runners-up also seeded for the play-off draw.

Should automatically-qualified tournament hosts, Switzerland finish in the top three of their group then the best-ranked fourth-placed team will advance to the play-offs, despite suffering relegation to League C alongside three other teams.

In League C, the five group winners will gain promotion to League B for UWNL whilst the three best-placed teams out of five runners-up will feature in the play-offs, albeit unseeded.
