New York Rangers rookie Matt Rempe was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for elbowing New Jersey Devils defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler.

The play occurred late in the second period. As Siegenthaler dumped the puck in from the neutral zone, Rempe came across the ice and hit the defenceman in the head with his elbow. Siegenthaler was slow to get up and left the game with an apparent injury.

Devils forward Kurtis MacDermid was also given a 10-minute misconduct after he attempted to fight Rempe.

Rempe was playing in just his 10th NHL game, but this is now the second time he has been ejected for a hit in a game against the Devils. On Feb. 22 Rempe was given a match penalty for a hit to the head of Devils forward Nate Bastian. Rempe was not suspended for that hit.

The 21-year-old Rempe has quickly become a fan-favourite in New York for his seemingly fearless play. He has 54 penalty minutes in 10 career games since making his debut last month.
