Dirk Kuyt backs Xabi Alonso as potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Former Liverpool player Dirk Kuyt has voiced his support for his ex-teammate Xabi Alonso as a fitting replacement for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, highlighting Alonso’s promising start to his managerial career.

Alonso, presently at the helm of Bayer Leverkusen, has guided his team to an undefeated run in the Bundesliga this season, asserting a significant lead over traditional powerhouse Bayern Munich. Moreover, Leverkusen’s advancement to the Europa League quarter-finals further underscores Alonso’s managerial prowess.

Liverpool reportedly sees Alonso as an ideal candidate to take over from Klopp at the end of the season, considering his achievements with Leverkusen and his deep connection with the club.

Kuyt expressed unwavering confidence in Alonso’s coaching abilities, emphasizing his strategic acumen and leadership qualities both on and off the pitch during their time together as players.

Reflecting on Alonso’s transition from player to manager, Kuyt shared with the Liverpool Echo: “Xabi was always a guy who was thinking tactically, both on and off the pitch. His progression from managing U23s teams to leading Leverkusen to title contention in Germany demonstrates his managerial acumen.”

He further added, “People can say maybe it [Alonso taking over from Klopp] has come too quick but sometimes good things come very quickly and for me, definitely, he was always a guy during our playing time that was always thinking about the game; thinking tactically; talking always tactically outside of the pitch.”
