SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco’s annual 420 event at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park was abruptly canceled for 2024 this week. In a post on the event’s website, organizers cited a number of factors including city-wide budget cutbacks, the current headwinds facing the cannabis industry and the economy.

“Unfortunately, the 420 Hippie Hill event in Golden Gate Park will not be happening as planned this year,” the post read. The post went on to say that the group had been unable to secure the needed financial sponsorship to mount a “safe, clean, city & state compliant event.”

“We will be back next year!” the post promised.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department called the festival “a celebration of cannabis culture,” that “has traditionally drawn large crowds.”

“The cancellation of this year’s event is the result of two key factors: economic challenges within the cannabis industry, making sponsorships hard to secure, and City budget cuts impacting Rec and Park’s ability to cover staffing for the event,” the Rec and Park Department added in a statement.

With the event canceled, Recs and Park will hold volleyball and kickball tournaments in nearby Robin Williams Meadow on April 20.

The annual 4/20 at Hippie Hill event takes place every year on April 20 in the Sharon Meadows area of the park, known as Hippie Hill. The free event regularly attracts thousands of attendees.

Attractions and amenities at the event typically include:

  • On-site cannabis dispensaries
  • Rest and decompression tents
  • Food and beverages
  • DJs and entertainment
  • On-site ATMs

In 2022, former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson attended the event to promote a new social media platform. While leaving San Francisco, the boxer got into an altercation with another passenger on a plane leaving SFO.

Video of the incident published by TMZ showed Tyson punching the man who allegedly threw a water bottle at him. In the end, no charges were filed against Tyson.
