Newcastle Knights coach Adam O’Brien has given a coy response into the reaction of Tyson Gamble after he was axed for the recalled Jackson Hastings.
O’Brien was asked how the ultra competitive Gamble responded to the news, and implied a sense of frustration without directly saying he was disappointed.
“I’m not going to lie to you, naturally (disappointed), these guys want to play first grade and that’s what I love about them,” he said.
“I don’t want them to be doing cartwheels out of my office when I tell them. As long as I’m honest with the reasoning and give them a clear direction on what I want them to work on, which is what I did with Jackson.
“He’s a clubman, he’ll go on with the job this weekend, he already has in training and trained well after the news yesterday so I expect him to go out and do what Tyson does best and that’s go and compete.”
O’Brien was also asked whether he’s still trying to work out his best combination in the halves but described it as merely an “opportunity”.
The coach also responded “a little bit of both” when explaining whether the reasoning was to test combinations or around individual performances.
