ROCHESTER, N.Y (WROC) – The April 8 Eclipse is just a day away, and Governor Kathy Hochul addressed the state with remarks on preparations for the celestial event. She talks about travel concerns, road safety, and eye protection.
The eclipse will take around two hours to pass across all of New York State, with only a brief window of being in the path of totality. State officials say they have been planning for the eclipse for 18 months.
Hochul warns about a high volume of traffic and visitors, advising travelers to arrive early and stay late, plan for extra travel time with traffic, check the weather forecast before driving, and pack plenty of water and food for the trip. The state has a website set up dedicated to the eclipse, such as glasses, merchandise, and a music playlist.
Hochul asks that drivers do not pull over on the side of the highway to view the eclipse, as tempting as it may be. Emergency vehicles must be able to pass through traffic in case of emergency and this will hinder their ability to do so.
The Gov. reminds eclipse viewers that it is unsafe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection, which can result in serious permanent injury. Be sure to purchase specialized eclipse viewing glasses for the celestial event.
