In the 25th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by seven wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field first. The judgement appeared to be accurate, as the unit only conceded 44 runs and took two wickets in the powerplay. It was the magician Jasprit Bumrah who showcased his tricks, especially in the slog overs. While 52 runs were scored by RCB batters in non-Bumrah overs, the ace bowlers just gave 14 and picked four wickets at the same time. Yet, with 196/8 on the board, the visiting team would have backed themselves to defend this.

In the chase, the home unit completely thrashed the opponents in just 15.3 overs. The chase began with some fireworks from Ishan Kishan‘s (69) and Rohit Sharma‘s (38) willows. Both openers put up 101 runs together in just nine overs, which helped the side not just get a powerful start but also to grab two points with ease. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t have been possible without Suryakumar Yadav‘s (52) explosive knock. The impact player reached his half-century in just 18 balls, which included five fours and four magnificent sixes. Along with him, skipper Hardik Pandya (21) also hit three sixes in six balls to take MI over the victory line with 27 balls to spare.

With the bat, Faf du Plessis (61) did an excellent job for the visitors, as he scored a half-century and provided a strong start. From the other end, Rajat Patidar (50) also came back in form and smashed a quickfire fifty. While other batters couldn’t bat longer, these two put up 82 runs for the third wicket partnership. Towards the end, Dinesh Karthik (53) also brought in a storm at the Wankhede and hammered a fifty at a strike rate of 230. With four sixes and five fours, DK helped RCB reach 196 runs.

With the ball in the first inning, the legendary Jasprit Bumrah scalped a fifer and just gave 21 runs in his quota of four overs. One wicket each was also picked up by Gerald Coetzee, Akash Madhwal, and Shreyas Gopal.

RCB just took three wickets, of which one each was taken by Mohammed Siraj, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Will Jacks.

Jasprit Bumrah was awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling show. Following this win, MI have secured their second victory of the season and are now seventh in the points tally.
