SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The teenager killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista Wednesday morning has been identified.
FOX 5/KUSI previously reported on the collision that happened around 3:20 a.m. Wednesday on southbound I-5 near Palomar Street. According to California Highway Patrol, a 67-year-old San Diego woman was believed to be driving a Honda Civic in the wrong direction on the freeway at speeds between 80 and 90 miles per hour.
Authorities said the Honda crashed into a Dodge Challenger being driven by a 16-year-old boy from Imperial Beach. CHP said the Dodge subsequently caught fire. Both drivers died from their injuries, according to authorities.
In a letter shared to FOX 5/KUSI by the Sweetwater Union High School District, the driver of the Dodge was identified as Ryder Shoup, a 10th grade student at Mar Vista high School.
The letter, which was originally sent out to families by the principal of the high school, said in part, “Our entire school community has been profoundly affected by this loss. Ryder was a kind 10th grade student with a memorable smile. He was actively involved in our football program and served as a lifeguard in the community.”
The letter added that school counselors and psychologists are available to provide support to students.
A toxicology report is pending through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if alcohol/and or drugs were a factor in the crash.
